Comparing Curt and Tow Ready Trailer Wiring Harnesses for a 2010 Subaru Legacy
Published 10/19/2012 >
Question:
The 118511 requires a power wire, but the 56091 does not so easier to install. I will only be connecting a small utility trailer or lights on a cargo carrier. Do I need the powered unit or will the Curt work fine? Thanks!

Normally when there is a choice between a powered converter and a non-powered converter I go with the powered converter. The reason is that the powered converter, in this case # 118511, gets most of the power for the trailer lights from the vehicle battery. This protects the vehicle wiring and any potential electrical problems that could occur should there be a short on the trailer wiring.
Either harness will work for you but the little extra effort needed to route and connect the power wire could be worth it. Routing and installing the power wire is not as difficult as you might think. I have included a link to an FAQ article I wrote that provides some tips on routing the power wire for you.
I have also linked instructions for the Curt harness and videos for each harness.
