Question:

It appears that this model Hopkins HM42245 does have the converter, but does not require a cable ran from the Converter to the battery of the vehicle. Is that correct? If so, then this is a much easier install then the other two models Tekonsha 118390 and Curt C55597. Is there an advantage to those other two models that have the power cable that needs to run-up to the vehicles battery?

The Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM42245 does have the advantage of having a much easier install than other options since it does not require running the power wire up to the vehicle battery but the battery wire offers your vehicle protection from trailer wiring shorts from transferring to the vehicle wiring. This is because the power draws from the battery and not the vehicle taillights. So a short would not hurt anything.

So your best option is the Tekonsha kit part # 118390 as long as you are okay with a more involved install. This kit also has the most reliable converter box as well.
