Photo attached. If this product wont work with my factory-installed bars on a 2017 Mazda CX-5, can you recommend a canoe solution that would? Thanks!

The Thule Portage Canoe Carrier w/ Tie-Downs # TH819 will work with the OEM crossbars on your 2017 Mazda CX-5. I confirmed this fitment directly with Thule.
This is a really easy system to use and I think you will be happy with it.
