The strut you're asking about, part # 3691826-50 is rated at 50 lbs, which is the amount of force required to compress it. Therefore, you'd want to hatch lid to weigh significantly less than that. Taylor Made tells me that because this is a replacement part, the best practice is to match the capacity of the replacement with the capacity of the original part.
