Question:
can I just connect the backup camera to a switch instead of the reverse lights so when it only comes on when I want it to. I attached the av to the back of the housing unit and to the gray wire on the radio and I ran the power and ground to the back of the car and connected it to the ground and power for the camera. flipped the switch and no dice. What am I missing?

If you wanted to use a switch to activate the camera of the Rear View Safety Backup Camera System # RVS-770614 you certainly could. It would be a matter of running the trigger wire to a circuit that has power like the battery of the trailer and then installing a switch there. Typically the easiest solution though is to use the running light circuit of the trailer wiring as the trigger circuit so that you can turn the cameras on easily whenever needed by turning on running lights or headlights of the trailer.
