How Does Trailer Clearance Light with Three Wires Replace Trailer Light that Uses One Wire

Updated 02/18/2020 | Published 02/17/2020

Question:

I got an LED clearance light with 3 wires. My trailer currently has a light with a single black wire. What do I do with all the wires on this new light????

Sounds like your clearance light is a two function light with two brightness intensities and uses a ground wire whereas your old light grounds through the mounting hardware and is a single brightness intensity setup.

So your new light most likely has a white, red, and black wire. The white will be ground and the other two will be different brightnesses. You'll want to test the wires with a 12 volt power source from like a car battery to decide which circuit you want to use for the running lights and use it for the black wire on your trailer and then run the ground wire to the mounting hardware of the light and you'd be set!
