The red wire for a brake controller connects to the cold side of the brake switch. The brake switch is located above the brake pedal. There are several wires going in and out of the switch. Use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the wires. You need the wire that shows a signal on the circuit tester ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed. If it shows power with the running lights or turn signals it is not the correct wire.

If you cannot locate this wire, your truck may have a CHMSL circuit (center high mount stop light). There should be a legend on the fuse box somewhere that shows what each fuse is for. If you can find a CHMSL circuit, then you can tap into it.
