Question:

I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra with tow package. It has a factory plug and adaptor for break controller. It does not have an end to connect to the break controllerjust 5 loose wires. I understand which wires from the controller match the wires from the adaptor, but the adaptor has one extra wire which says to route to the headlight switchthis has me confused.

The extra wire you are speaking of is meant to be attached to an illumination circuit, and is not needed to install the P2 on your Tundra. Just tape off the end of it, and bundle it up out of the way. It sounds like you might have the factory pigtail. If this is the case, it would connect to the controller as follows:

Black wire with red stripe to black wire on P2
Green wire with white stripe to red wire on P2
Brown wire to white wire on P2
Red wire to blue wire on P2.

The green wire is for the illumination circuit.

You can confirm this by using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. The wire that shows a constant 12-volts while the headlights are off is the power feed that connects to the black brake controller wire. The wire that only shows current when the headlights are on is the illumination circuit that is not used. The wire that shows voltage only when the brake pedal is pressed will connect to the red brake controller wire. This will leave two wires remaining, one which is the ground that connects to the white controller wire, the other being the brake output to the trailer connector which would connect to the blue brake controller wire.
