Cant the part screwed into the tail gate itself be removed?

The blind nut you're speaking of that's used to install the DeeZee # DZ43301 tailgate assist works like a molly bolt. The portion of the bolt inside the tailgate mushrooms out, preventing the nut from pulling through. If it needs to be removed, it can be drilled out with a 7/16 inch drill bit.
