Mounting A Generator To A 1972 Shasta Camper

Question:

I am putting together a mobile specialty coffee business that I will pull a 1972 Shasta with a Ford Expedition. The espresso machine is a 220V therefore it causes a very large power need for the camper. I have purchased a Honda eu7000is for my needs, but the tongue is too small for it and the rear of camper doesn’t appear to be able to accommodate it either. The dimensions are: Weight is 262lbs, Dimensions L x W x H 33.4 x 27.6 x 28.4 Please see if there is any options that you can suggest. I will attach pictures of the tongue, the back and the hitch.

With limited tongue space, one solution would be to add a trailer hitch and cargo carrier to the rear of your Shasta camper but there are multiple items to address first. An RV/Camper hitch like either the Curt Adjustable Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13701 is an option, providing up to 500lbs of tongue weight for a cargo carrier and your generator. These are always limited by your lowest rated component and the camper may not have sufficient capacity to support the weight of a carrier, hitch, and generator. Your trailer was not designed with a trailer hitch by the manufacturer so an exact weight capacity would be very hard to determine. It would be up to the installer to ensure that they are installed in a secure manner to achieve maximum capacity.

To find a carrier that can accommodate a generator with those dimensions, you will want to look to a larger option like the Flint Hill Goods 30x50 Cargo Carrier w/ 48" Long Ramp # FHG77ZR. Hitch mounted cargo carriers are not tested or rated for use on the back of a trailer however. There is more movement and bouncing at the back of a trailer compared to a car or truck due to the distance from the rear axle. For these reasons you will want to run this by an RV or Camper service to see if they can install with adequate capacity for this application.

If you are able to install and use with adequate capacity, I recommend using s-hook ratchet straps like part # EM05710. These are 1-inch straps that are 8-ft long, and it has a capacity of 500-lbs.

Included are video resources with additional information to review regarding these solutions.
