Tongue Weight Rating on Fulton Trailer Coupler # F343000301
Updated 05/11/2012 | Published 05/10/2012 >
Question:
I am considering upgrading my current 3500 lb rated coupler to a 5000 lb rated one. None of the couplers for a 3inch channel have the maximum tongue loads listed. My current couple is 3500lbs trailer wt / 350 lbs tongue wt. Is the maximum tongue wt typically 10 of the coupler capacity?

Yes, the tongue weight capacity will usually be 10 per cent of the couplers maximum weight capacity. On the Fulton Trailer Coupler, part # F343000301, that you have referenced, with the maximum weight capacity being 5,000 lbs the tongue weight capacity will be 500 lbs.
Normally, when choosing a trailer coupler the gross trailer weight of the trailer is used because the couplers capacity must be equal to or greater than the gross trailer weight.
I am including a link to a FAQ page on trailer couplers.
