Video Transcript for Fulton Fas-Lok Coupler Review F233000301

Hi, everyone. Aiden here with etrailer.com. And today we're gonna be taking a look at these two trailer couplers from Fulton. These are their fast lock couplers and they're gonna be pretty much the exact same both compatible with a two inch ball both featuring a three inch channel here. So just make sure you pick out the right one for your ball mount and for your trailer. Let's check them out.

So right away, really the only difference between these two is this larger one is going to be a 5,000 pound weight capacity and our smaller or shorter one here is going to be a 3,500 pound weight capacity. So again, just look at what you're gonna be hauling and what kind of capacity you need and pick the right one out for you. They're both gonna mount up the same way though. They've got a three inch hole spacing center to center for those side mounting holes. So all we had to do was just take out our old hardware from our old coupler and pop this one right in, and it was a direct replacement.

One minor thing that we did notice when we we're looking at these is that this 3,500 pound one does have a slightly longer lever here. The actual trigger for the latch right there is the same but this little part that covers it is a bit longer on this one. Like we just mentioned, they do have that trigger style latch. It is pretty easy to operate, get it all locked down. And then of course we'd want to run a pin or maybe even a locking pin through here to make sure it's secure.

You can find those at our site here if you need one. And overall this does feel pretty smooth when I'm operating it. One thing I'd worry about is the longevity of that, though. That is sort of a problem that I've seen with this trigger style latch is that it might be really smooth out of the box but over a long period of time, these parts might begin to seize up a bit, which is why some of those easy latch ones are a bit nicer and easier to use. But we do have a fair few reviews on our site from people who have had this for a year or more saying that it's actually held up really well and that the coating has protected it from any sort of rest or corrosion.

So that's good to hear. And you can see here on the inside of the one that's not installed, as I'm opening and closing that lever, everything in here with the jaw moves really smoothly. So that's really great to see too. These are both gonna have a zinc coating, so that should keep things nice and resistant to rust and corrosion, water shouldn't be too much of an issue especially if you're leaving it outside. Like I mentioned before, the install process is really simple. We just had to take our old one off, put the new one in its place and all the holes lined up pretty well. So just check out how we did it. Now, the first thing you wanna do is make sure you get the old coupler removed and more than likely, if you don't have new hardware set aside you will wanna save this hardware that you take off because the new one will not come with hardware. Then we can take our new coupler and just slide it over where that old one was. And luckily all of our previous holes will line up as well, because we checked that three inch hole spacing. And then we can just run our old hardware back through to attach it. So our holes from the old coupler didn't line up perfectly. All we had to do was just come back through with the drill bit. We kind of use the coupler as a template and just enlarged the holes a bit and everything's fitting much better now. And that's about it for the install. Really, the only thing you gotta worry about is if that hole spacing is correct from your old coupler and if need be enlarge those holes. And then just making sure you've got hardware, whether you're reusing or picking up some new ones. Other than that, though, that's it for this Fulton coupler. Thanks for watching..

by:

Easy to use works great a great solution

by:

I just received the coupler and it is stout, I haven't had a chance to mount it yet but I don't anticipate any problems.
Etrailer is always easy to deal with!

by:

Had what I needed for a good price with quick delivery. Thanks

by:

Th hitch installed without any problems. The only issue with the hitch is you have to have the ball positioned exacting right or the locking tongue will get jammed and the ball will not seat. It might take a few tries before you get it positioned correctly.

I purchased a fin keel sailboat on a Trail Rite trailer in Oklahoma and upon getting the rig back to Colorado, I had to replace the surge brake receiver as it was completely rusted out. I purchased this receiver to replace the defective hydraulic version as well as purchasing a complete electrical brake system (drums, shoes, wheels, wiring and tires) to complete the changeover. Everything from etrailer has worked as intended.

by:

Exact replacement for same item that came with my Trailex car trailer in 2002. Orig was just tired out from use. E-Trailer was great to do business with.

All is good Thanks Rachael for your follow-up, hoping to be using trailer more this year.

Just installed my hitch to my boat trailer. I replaced my 1 7/8 in ball hitch with the new 2". Mounting holes were identical to my old hitch so it only took 15 minutes to put the new hitch on. Great quality at a good price. I am a repeat customer of etrailer and all has been good.

by:

I have a Shoreline boat trailer from the early 90's that needed a new coupler. The coupler I was replacing had mounting holes drilled 1" to center from the top of the outside of the unit. Most couplers place this hole at 1 1/4" from the top which would leave the coupler sitting with a gap between the top of the square beam and the coupler.

If your trailer has this less common hole placement, this coupler is a great looking and functioning unit.

by:

Our old trailer’s hitch was rusty and this was a no-brainer to fit over the tongue.

After one year of use, still very happy with this product. Fit and function are excellent. Finish is as good as the day I installed it. Very happy with this coupler.

by:

Great price on my item. Best customer service in the market in my opinion. Calm, Cool, Collected. Like a well oiled machine.

by:

Fast turn around. Replaced the coupler on my Bayliner boat trailor. Works great and heavier than the original equipment.
Thank you etrailer!

One year later the Coupler is working Great! Totally met my needs.

by:

I upgraded my old rusted 3,500 lb. coupler to this 5,000 lb. one for a great price. Best part of the bargain was that shipping was only $7.99. eTrailer personnel even called as soon as I had placed the online order to tell me that they were waiting for restock of the part; that I could substitute for another brand or wait a week for my original request. Great prices and customer service!

by:

every component of the trailer for my 17ft boat was getting a little ratty. Salt water is a B. Replaced the jack, winch and coupler with parts from etrailer and don't have a single complaint. Good products, shipped quickly, good support. Thanks all.

by:

Although made in China, quality appears very good with smooth operation, positive clamping and excellent fit. All hole are properly punched with exacting location. Used this unit to replace a surge brake hydraulic coupler of equal gauge material.

by:

This unit fit perfectly as a replacement to my factory Aluma trailer coupler, which the latch failed after a a few trips. This unit is clearly built better! Shipped fast and well packaged.

by:

Ordered on Monday got it Thursday always good service. Coupler works great looks a lot better than the rusty one that was on the trailer. The trailer is aluminum so it looks like new again.

by:

Solid built, but holes for mounting bolts didnt line up. Had to alter my trailer a bit to get bolts into tuonge channel and fit the coupler to trailer.

by:

Correct item promptly shipped at a fair price. Thank you!

  • Can Welded-On Dico Coupler be Replaced with a Bolt-On Type
It is certainly possible to replace a welded-on coupler with a bolt-on type so long as the new coupler's capacity is correct for the trailer and it fits the trailer tongue. If you know the trailer manufacturer it is never a bad idea to check with them about doing that retro-fit, just to ensure that they have no concerns about drilling through the tongue for installation of the bolt on coupler. They may also be able to offer you guidance about the bolt grade to use, typically a Grade 5 U.S. I...

Both are a bolt-on installation, designed for 3 inch channel trailers, have trigger latches, and work with a 2 inch ball. • Is Straight Tongue Coupler Stronger Depending on if it is Bolted or Welded?
There actually isn't any difference in strength for a straight tongue coupler, no matter if it is bolted on or welded on. Most couplers are designed to be one or the other, and their capacity won't change - and the security to your trailer - will be the same regardless of the installation method. For example, the weld-on Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler - 2" Ball - 3" Channel Tongue # BD028244 and bolt-on Fulton Fas-Lok Coupler, 2" Ball, 3" Channel # F343000301 both have a 5,000 lb capacity...

You need to know what channel size and the weight capacity you will need for the new coupler. The most common sizes are the 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch channels. Coupler, # CT-3001-Z , can be used if you have a 2 inch channel and a weight capacity of 3,500 lbs. If you need a coupler for a 3 inch channel, the Fulton # F343000301...
