Crossbar Spacing of Rhino-Rack Roof Rack on 2014 Ford Flex With Naked Roof for Rooftop Cargo Box

Updated 12/17/2019 | Published 12/16/2019

Question:

I purchased the following rack: Crossbars - part# RRVA150B legs - part#- RRRLKVA Roofrack legs- part# DK188 My cargo box has a crossbar spacing position of 24 inches. The crossbar spacing specified in the instructions I received is 31.5 inches. Can I use this rack system was a crossbar spacing of 24 inches? Can I just adjust the roof rack legs on the crossbar so that it fits on the roof using a 24 inch crossmember spacing?

Expert Reply:

The crossbar spacing of the Rhino-Rack roof rack on your 2014 Ford Flex with a naked roof - Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRVA150B-2, Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Legs # RRRLKVA, and Custom DK Fit Kit # DK188 - does need to be spaced at 31-1/2 inches apart, as per the manufacturer's instructions. This is the spacing Rhino-Rack determined was appropriate for your Flex in order to maintain the capacity and stability of the rack, so you will need to remain at this spacing.

What you will need is a rooftop cargo box that is compatible with the 31-1/2 inch bar spread, and there are some quality rooftop boxes that will work and have plenty of cargo space. The Malone Cargo16 Rooftop Cargo Box # MPG902 is the least expensive box that will work. The Thule Pulse Medium Rooftop Cargo Box - 14 cu ft - Matte Black # TH614 is in the mid-tier of price and will also work, and I recommend checking it out for a solid, well put-together box.
