Could 4-Way to 7-Way Adapter Cause False Trailer Connection Error with Brake Controller

Updated 06/20/2019 | Published 06/19/2019

Question:

Hello, I have installed a Draw-Tite I-command brake controller on a 2016 Toyota Highlander with a Curt 4 pole to 7 pole with test lamps socket. I have the light box connected to the factory harness and the four pin connector has worked perfectly in the past. My problem is the brake controller is indicating that a trailer is constantly connected even when there is no trailer attached and is actuating as if it was. Is there a way to fix this issue so my controller will properly display if a trailer is connected or not? Is there a concern with the brake controller constantly sending power every time I brake to an unconnected plug? My guess is maybe it has something to do with the test lights? Thank you.

If the problem has always been there then the issue is the test lamps causing the controller to think a trailer is connected. If the problem started at a later time it's most likely corrosion on the trailer wiring pins and all you'd need to do is sand the pins on both sides of the trailer wiring.

That said, there really isn't a problem with your controller sending power back to the connector without a trailer connected.

To fix the connection issue though the best solution would be to swap out your current 4-way to 7-way adapter and use a # 37185 instead.
