Updated 06/08/2019 | Published 06/07/2019

Question:

I am looking to get a trailer that weighs about 150 lbs and loaded with at most 200-250 pounds of kayak and gear. would this hitch be able to support towing that?

Yes, the Curt Class I receiver part # C11356 is rated for up to 200 lbs of tongue weight so it supports the weight of your small trailer and gear. Tongue weight is normally 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight and it sounds like your tongue weight could be around 60 lbs at the max. As long as you do not exceed the 200 lb tongue weight capacity the Curt can support it.

However, I was able to find your owner's manual as well and it lists many different configurations that depends on how much you can tow. The least amount listed was 1,000 lbs which means you want to keep your tongue weight at 100 lbs. Since you are below 100 lbs tongue weight with your setup now you will be fine but If you ever decide to tow more in the future, it is a good idea to take your VIN to a dealership to see how much weight your particular Mazda 6 can tow. I have attached a video of a Curt installation on a 2016 Mazda 6 for your reference.

The recommend ball mount for the Curt hitch is part # C45016 because it is longer to clear the bumper on the Mazda. The ball you need is part # 19258 for a 2" ball. If your trailer takes a 1-7/8" ball then you need part # 19256.

I recommend Tekonsha Wiring Harness part # 118587 for the Mazda 6 because the Modulite Converter boxes of the Tekonsha wiring harnesses are known to last longer than the other brands. I have attached an installation video for your reference.

For a theft deterrent, you want to use locking hitch part # 1TR63254 to lock the ball mount to the hitch.
