Question:
I am building a prototype small gantry crane. Will this winch allow the operator to lower a load safely. In other words, to winch it down. I will need to put two cables on the spool I only need about four foot of lift, but it needs to be from two points. .

As long as the load you plan on lifting and lowering is at least 50 pounds the Pro Series Standard Brake Winch # PSKR10000301 will work well. It features a self-activating automatic brake that will safely hold the load whenever the handle is released - the load simply has to be at least 50 pounds for the automatic brake to activate.
This particular winch is perfect for applications like yours along with hoists and boat lifts. It has a 1,000 pound capacity for the first layer and 500 pounds for the full drum. It has a maximum cable diameter of 7/32".
I have attached a short video review that you can check out as well.
