DIY installation seemsfoot relatively easy, based on the research Ive done. But before making a purchase want to be absolutely sure that no drilling or cutting of say heat shield materials is required for a 2011 Gas-engine VW Golf. Thanks for your help

You are correct, installation of the Draw-Tite # 24825, does not require any drilling or cutting to install on your 2011 Volkswagen Golf w/ gas engine. You will need to use the included pull wire to install the bolts in the frame rails (see video).
Installation time is estimated at approximately 30 minutes and you should have no problem installing the hitch in your driveway or garage. I would recommend having a friend help you position the hitch when it is time to bolt it to the vehicle.
The Draw-Tite does not include the recommended drawbar which is necessary for towing. If you plan to do some light towing, you may need the following items:
Wiring # 119250KIT
1-7/8 Hitch Ball #19256
2 Hitch Ball # 19258
If you plan to use the hitch for accessories like a bike rack, you will be limited to those that are compatible with Class I hitches like the Rola TX-102 2 Bike Carrier # 59400. You will also be limited to carrying 2 bikes.
