Tow Ready has determined that the 2012 Chevy Cruz has a wiring system that requires a powered converter, # 118508. The power wire that connects to the battery provides the power to the trailer lights. This protects the vehicles sensitive wiring and electrical system from damage.

The Cruz also uses a 3 wire system and most trailers use a 2 wire system. That is why a converter is needed. The vehicle has separate turn signals and brake lights, a trailer has combined turn signals and brake lights. Some vehicles, possibly your Chevy truck, are set up as a 2 wire system and would not need a converter.

On the 2012 Cruz, there is another option that does not require a direct connection to the battery. You could use Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # C56214. This harness also installs behind each of the tail lights like the Tow Ready harness, but it does not get power from the battery, it draws from the tail light wiring. I have included a link to the installation details for you.

If it were me and my new car, I would go with the circuit protected Tow Ready wiring harness which offers more protection for the vehicle.
