Installation of a Brake Controller on a 2009 Pontiac Montana Van

On a 2009 Pontiac Montana Van the problem is that the installation of a brake controller can shut down the brake light system in the van. The red brake wire that is on the back of the brake controller is normally connected to the cold side of the brake light switch to activate the trailer brakes when the brake pedal is applied. If that red wire from the brake controller is connected to the cold side of the brake light switch on the Montana Van it will shut down the whole brake light system.

I have a technical bulletin from Tekonsha that will show you where to connect the red brake wire from the brake controller to keep the brake light system from shutting down. You will need to connect the red brake wire to a white wire located in the Body Control Module (BCM) that activates the high mount brake light. Using this connection will not shut down the brake light system. I am including a link to the technical bulletin.

The parts needed to install a brake controller would be the brake controller, a 4-Way connector on the Montana, and the Brake Controller 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, part # ETBC7.

The brake controller I would recommend is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885.

The 4-Way connector would be the Tow Ready T-One Wiring Harness, part # 118396, if it is the Montana SV6, and the Curt Wiring Harness, part # C55355, if it is just the Montana.

The # ETBC7 kit will connect to the 4-Way on the van and have four extra wires that would need to be hardwired to the vehicle. I am including links to a FAQ page of installation instructions for the # ETBC7 and a video review for the # ETBC7 kit.
