It's definitely not abnormal for your transmission fluid to heat up while towing, especially when you're going up hills that force the truck to work a lot harder. To help with this adding a transmission cooler like you mentioned is a great idea.
For your 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500HD I highly recommend the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit w/ Fan # D13960. This cooler will do a great job of improving the performance and function of your transmission with its reversible tornado fan to ensure optimum airflow and stacked-plate design to help with heat transfer. The remote cooler can be mounted anywhere where space permits on your truck. It measures 13 inches wide, 10 inches tall, and 5-5/8 inches deep.
If your 2500HD has the 6.0L engine you will need the Adapter Fitting # D13035 to help with installation.
Another option is with a pan cooler like the Derale # D14207. This will simply replace the existing oil pan on your Silverado to increase its fluid capacity. This along with the built-in turbulator tubes for better airflow helps to keep the transmission cooler.
Between the two options I do recommend going with the Derale Hyper-Cool Transmission Cooler # D13960 as this will provide much better cooling for your application.
