The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12185 referenced in your question is designed to mount to a vehicle using existing holes in its frame. The hitch cannot be modified in any way so that the receiver is vertical as this is simply not how it was tested and rated. Any modifications to a hitch like this would void the manufacturer's warranty and likely negatively affect its performance and durability.
If you can tell me the year, make, and model of your vehicle I will be happy to make a recommendation for the hitch that has the most hidden design when installed. This particular Curt hitch is a fit for the 2016-2018 Chevy Malibu and the 2018-2019 Buick Regal Sportback.
