5th Wheel Hitch Compatibility with 2019 Chevy Colorado
Updated 09/25/2018 | Published 09/24/2018 >
Question:
I am trying to figure out if a Chevy Colorado will be able to pull a light weight 5th wheel travel trailer. The GVWR is less than 6,000 pounds on the trailer. The hitch weight is @ 1,000 pounds. The Reese hitch specs state that the hitch will not work on a bed shorter than 6foot without using a sidewinder. Is there any 5th wheel hitch configuration that will work on the Colorado?

There is not a custom 5th wheel kit confirmed to fit a 2019 Chevy Colorado. The bed length and the towing capacity of the truck are issues for 5th wheel towing. You will first need to confirm your 5th wheel trailer GVWR is less than the capacity of your specific truck. I can see the towing capacity range of 3,500 lbs to 7,000 lbs, so you want to make sure your specific truck is even capable of towing the 6,000 lbs trailer.
If your truck is rated for more than the trailer, then technically you can install a 5th wheel hitch and utilize a Sidewinder which will be the only viable option. You can use the Reese Universal Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches - 10 Bolt # RP30035 making sure to position the rail locations based on the rear axle being centered. There are not dimensions given for this fit. You will need to space the rails 22 inches apart on center, and it is recommended to physically use the hitch to help set the rail locations.
You will need to use a fixed mount hitch and a Sidewinder pin box for this to work. I recommend the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # RP30047 for your hitch along with a custom wedge # SWW-03.
I've linked the page to your Sidewinder options and have attached an article to help further. If that doesn't help, I've also attached a way to measure the pin box to assist with proper fit. Let me know if you need further assistance.
