Can Erickson Tie-Down Rope w/ Ratchet # 01801 Be Used Outside
Published 08/16/2018 >
Question:
If this is left as a boat cover tie down outside, are the springs on the ratchet rust proof to prevent the ratchet from failing in the future? I see the hooks are zinc plated which will help to some extent with rust, but nothing else is mentioned about the durability of the unit related to weather or whether its rated for inside or outside use. Thanks!

Expert Reply:
The Erickson Tie-Down Rope w/ Ratchet # 01801 that you referenced does feature a corrosion-resistant housing but the inner components of the ratchet are not rust proof. The unit can certainly be used outside but you may just want to position the ratchet in a way that prevents water from seeping inside the housing if it will be used on a cover for long-term storage.
I have attached a short video demonstration that you can also check out.
