The P.9 or o.9 error message on your now discontinued Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller 5535 typically indicates a loss of connection to the battery ground. Check the white wire coming from the brake controller and make sure that it is securely connected to the negative terminal on your vehicle's battery.
If that does not resolve the issue, check the grounds at both the vehicle side and trailer side connector, making sure they are attached to clean bare metal surfaces that are free of any debris or corrosion. Check the ground wires coming from each brake assembly on the trailer as well to make sure each has a secure connection.
If you are still having issues, please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.
