Since the brake light on your controller stays red when you release the brake, it is still getting brake signal on that red wire. This could be from the wiring connection being wrong or from a sticking brake switch. The controller should switch from a red light to a green light when the brake light function is not activated. I recommend testing the red wire using a circuit tester like # PTW2993.
I've attached an article to assist with testing your brake controller if that red wire does have power when you hit the brake pedal and does not have power when you let off the brake. If it has power both when you are on the brake and when you release it, then you either are connected to the wrong side of the switch or you have a sticking switch that will also leave your vehicle lights on after you release the pedal.
