If your 2016 Chevy Colorado came with the factory 7-Way connector, then all the needed wiring for a brake controller installation is already run beneath the dash. The black wire from a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 is the wire for 12V power to the controller. This will need to be connected to the corresponding wire beneath the truck's dash, which should be labeled for function. If the factory wires are not labeled, then you will want to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to verify the correct connections, as going by color alone isn't always the most accurate method.
If you are connected to the correct wire on your Chevy Colorado and the brake controller is still not powering on, then I recommend checking the fuse that should be located in the F27 position inside the engine compartment power distribution system. Make sure this fuse is present and in good condition.
If the controller is installed correctly and the mentioned fuse is good, then I recommend checking the factory 12V wire that you are connected to for any frays or damaged sections, replacing as needed. If you are using an older brake controller, the unit self might also be the issue and may need to be replaced. If you do receive power when testing the power wire on the truck and the unit isn't powering up, this would indicate that the controller is damaged.
If you are still having issues, please let me know and I will be happy to do some more troubleshooting.
