Published 08/31/2011

Question:

Im looking at buying an Audi A3 but I need to install a trailer hitch fro my bike rack... the difficulty is rated 9 of 10 with slight modifications to the bumper. Is a 9 easy or hard, and what modifications are required t the bumper?

The rating of 9 is for difficulty of installation. The installation of this hitch requires temporary removal of the bumper and trimming of the bumper fascia.

The installation of the CURT Trailer Hitch # 11192, also requires removal of the metal bumper beam, the tail light assembly, the spare tire, and any other contents in the trunk. The exhaust and heat shields may also need to be removed temporarily. Installation of the hitch also requires drilling into the trunk pan.

I would recommend having an extra set of hands help you install the hitch. With some basic tools, you should be able to install the hitch in your driveway in 1 day. This hitch has an estimated installation time of 5 hours for Novice, but I would allow yourself a full day for the installation.

Since this CURT hitch is a Class I hitch, you will be limited to bike racks that are compatible with Class I 1-1/4 hitches. You will want to check your bike rack to make sure it is compatible with a Class I hitch. Also, Class I hitches limit you to carrying only 2 bikes.

I have linked instructions for the CURT Trailer Hitch, part # 11192, which lists all the required tools and details of the installation. I have also linked an FAQ on trailer hitch installation tips.
