Question:
Would like to add a hitch and wire harness to my 2008 Vovlo XC90 and have some questions about 4 and 7 pin harnesses. Would also like to doublecheck the hitch part number. Harness question: Plan to purchase a small ultralight trailer with electric brakes that I assume will require a 7-pin harness. All the harnesses I see are 4-pin e. g, Curt 118411 which would require an adapter. Is there a 7-pin harness for the Volvo i. e., one that does not need an adapter? Related question: I will occasionally be towing a small utility trailer with 4-pin wiring - how would this work if the harness were 7-pin? The easy question: Is part number 13559 correct for the Curt 3500/5000k hitch for my 2008 Volvo XC90? Sorry for the newbie questions - this is my first hitch rodeo.

For your 2008 Volvo XC90, the trailer hitch you want is actually the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13559. This is the only Draw-Tite hitch confirmed to fit.
For your wiring harness, you will want the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118411. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your Volvo XC90's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, locate the power cable stud on the driver's side. Then connect the fuse holder wire with the ring terminal to the stud. I've attached a video to assist. This is all that is needed for your small utility trailer connection.
If you want to add a 7-way, then you will need the wiring kit # ETBC7 which will have an adapter connector that will have both the 7-way and 4-way trailer connectors. You will connect the 4-way connector listed above and then add the wire, connectors, circuit breakers, and then install the brake controller to get all the 7 functions. I've attached an article and a video to assist.
For a brake controller to make your electric brake output pin on your 7-way to work with your trailer brakes on a trailer with brakes, I recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195. It has easy preset options and an LCD screen for easy use. I've attached a video to assist.
Finally for your ball mount, I recommend the Curt Channel Style Adjustable Ball Mount # C45900 so you can adjust the height needed for whatever trailer you tow. Hitch lock # e98880 will secure your investment.
Let me know if you have further questions.
