Troubleshooting Curt Wiring Harness Issue on 1997 Chevy Venture LS.

Published 02/09/2018

Question:

If everything works at your 4-way when using the circuit tester like # PTW2993 for each function, before you connect your trailer, then the issue is most likely a ground connection on your trailer. You will want to make sure you have a bare metal to metal connection free of corrosion, rust, or debris. You may want to check your trailer lights as well as sometimes they have a separate ground connection. If there is not function on the 4-way on your vehicle, then I recommend you check the pin connections for bent pins and use some dielectric grease # 11755 in those connections. If that doesn't solve the issue, you will want to check each wire going into and then out of the converter box on the harness. if you have signal going in with a good ground, then you will need to check power coming out. If the functions don't work at that converter, you will need to have the harness replaced and it will covered under warranty since it is obviously less than a year old. Let me know if you have further questions.

Some vehicles will produce more power than others for the trailer functions which can change the results. So a truck with a higher amperage sent to the trailer may not be affected by a bad ground on the trailer, were as another truck with a slightly lower amperage may have a function that doesn't work with the same trailer. Since you have a new trailer, check the ground location as sometimes even paint can cause an issue so you may need to remove a little paint for a good ground that is metal to metal. The next thing to do if that doesn't solve the issue is to put a multimeter like # BTMT15 on each function to check the amperage.
