Any reason this can't be used on our house garden hose?

The Camco Quick Hose Connect # CAM20135 referenced in your question can absolutely be used for your home garden hose. This will let you attach and detach the hose from your water source quickly and easily. The brass connector also has an automatic shut-off, meaning the water will turn off as soon as you disconnect the hose.
