Recommended Friction Sway Control Setup for Trailer 26 Feet Long or Weight Distribution System

Updated 12/26/2017 | Published 12/24/2017

Question:

Want to do a WC sway control set up and would like feedback/advice to see if I am on the right track. Tow Vehicle is a Nissan Armada with factory tow package, Tekonsha primus iQ brake controller. Class IV, 2inch receiver, TW 850 lbs, Tow capacity 8,500 lbs. Curb Weight 5,963 lbs, GVWR 7,500 lbs Trailer is 26foot long, TW 640, 5,270 lbs dry weight, and 7,500 lbs GVW. After some research on etrailer here is what I think I need: a Need 4inch . Vehicle Receiver HT = 23, Trailer tongue height 19, b Need sway control tab and sway control bar. c Combined products that may achieve set up are: - Ball Mount DT40201 4inch TW 1K, 10K, 1 1/4 inch ball hole diameter - Sway Control Bracket RP 26003 1inch Ball hole diameter, 3/8inch thick - Reese Friction Sway Control Kit 83660 - 2inch Ball, 1 inch Diameter shank # 40038 rated 12K Am I on the right track? Some of my concerns I have are: -Hitch Ball Hole diameter is 1 1/4, the sway tab ball hole diameter is 1, so will a 1inch Shank diameter Ball move around? -sway adapter says 3/8inch thick but I read in the reviews that it will add 1/2inch to height so not sure if I need to re-look at calculation? Also, is the Ball I ed have a long enough shank to be able to reach all the way through the ball mount and adapter? - Any info/advice on how to set up the initial tension/friction on the sway control bar would be great. I watched all the videos but no one talks about how many quarter turnsinch you should adjust into initially until you have a chance to see how it performs and can decide to add or subtract.

For your system, the Draw-Tite Ball Mount - 2-3/4" Rise, 4" Drop - 8-3/4" Long - 10,000 lbs # DT40201 will give you the 4 inch drop you are seeking for level coupler height. Then the friction sway control kit # 83660 comes into play for the trailer. To add the bracket for this system to your ball mount, you will need # RP26003 but you are correct that the hitch ball hole size is 1 inch so you will need to use a 1 inch diameter shank hitch ball like # C40007. To ensure there is not excessive movement, you will also want to use the Reducer Bushing for Ball Mounts - 1-1/4" to 1" # 58184.

Due to the fact that your trailer is 26 feet long, two sway control brackets are recommended, which means you would also need to use weld on tab # 3442 for the second system. Your other option is to use a weight distribution system with integrated sway control instead like the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 10K GTW, 1K TW # RP66559. This is my recommendation because it will give you the sway control as well as the 4 inch drop you need for your trailer. You will then use # 19286 for a hitch ball. I have attached an article to help further as well.
