Axles Needed to Build Off Road Trailer

Question:

I am building a Jeep type offroad trailer and want to use a torsion type axle and use Jeep type wheels and tires as to carry only one spare. How would I set up the axle and hubs to accomplish this.

We do have a torsion type of axle that would be perfect for your application. I advise against using Jeep tires on your trailer. Passenger car tires have a sidewall that is a little more flexible and cannot perform as well as trailer tires on a trailer.

The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System w Hubs # A35RS545 are a great option to use because they are much easier to install than standard axles and they add ground clearance since they do not have a thru-axle. Basically, how you would want to install them is to mockup your trailer and adjust the placement of the Timbrens (like you would with "normal" axles) until the Tongue Weight (TW) of your trailer is 10% of the loaded weight of the trailer. You can use a TW Scale like part # e99044.

I am sending you a diagram in a separate email that has an equation that we recommend using as well.

This Timbren system is rated for 3,500 lbs so you will want to be sure that your fully loaded trailer will not exceed this weight. If it does, then you can check out our linked selection of Timbrens so that you can choose one with the proper weight rating for your application.
