Towing Setup Recommendations for a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Pulling a Boat and Trailer

Question:

Im looking at buying a 97 cherokee laredo w/optional 4x4 and a straight 6 engine...I believe the tow rating is 5000 lbs...Im also looking at a 21 boat w/inboard v6 on trailer that does not have brakes....I was wondering what the most inexpensive requirements would be to tow this setup....I am not sure if it has the factory tow package...it has a hitch but not sure about so I want to purchase a new one...Im estimating the boat weighs around 3000 and the trailer maybe 1000?? Maybe you would know better...I appreciate any input.

The first thing you will need to do is check with Jeep to determine what the towing capacity is for certain. Next, you will want to get an accurate weight for the boat and trailer. Once you have those numbers we will be able to know what is safe for you to do with your trailer.

In some states you are required to have trailer brakes on trailers that weigh over a certain amount. You will want to check with your local DOT to see what, if any, regulations are in place for trailer brakes. A simple internet search can be helpful also for this.

Either way, putting brakes on your trailer and having a brake controller will be in your best interest. Especially considering how much you think the boat and trailer weigh. For a brake controller I would recommend a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller # 90885.

To add trailer brakes to the trailer you will need to take the hubs off the axles and give me the numbers that are stamped on the bearings so we can determine what size spindle you have on your trailer and get the right brake drum hubs for your spindle.

For a hitch I would recommend a Curt Trailer Hitch # 13084. Installation instructions and video are attached for you to check out.

For trailer wiring I would recommend you get a Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the Jeep Cherokee # 118349. Installation instructions and video are attached also for this product.

Now to convert the 4-way from the # 118354 to a 7-way so you can use a brake controller you will need a Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit # ETBC7. Installation video and instructions are attached also for this product.

Other than the above products you will also need the following:

Ball Mount 1 inch Rise or 2 inch Drop # C45030
Hitch Ball with 2 inch Diameter and Medium Shank # 19247
Hitch Ball with 1-7/8 inch Diameter and Medium Shank # 19260
