Can Snow Chains Be Used On 2017 Ford Explorer with 225/50R20 Size Tires

Question:
Hi! We just purchased a 2017 4WD Ford Explorer with Hankook 225/50R20 tires. We had to sign something that said not to use chains, but to look in the manual for other traction options. To me the manual said chains or cables had to be 10 mm or less as measured on the side wall of your tire. Do you know of any chains that fit this description?

I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2017 Ford Explorer and was able to see the same information you mentioned in your question. It does state that the chains or cables need to have been rated as 10 mm or less in dimension, however it also states that cables or chains are only suitable for use on the factory P245/60R18 sized tires. Ford does not recommend that they be used on your larger 225/50R20 tires. I do recommend verifying this information in your copy of the owner's manual, as its possible that your particular model truck has alternate restrictions.
For your 225/50R20 tires, we do have the Konig Self-Tensioning Low-Pro Snow Tire Chains # TH04115265. Although I cannot recommend going against the vehicle's owner's manual, these chains do have the 10mm clearance rating and feature a self-tightening system that will secure the chains around the tires during installation.
I recommend also checking with your local Ford dealership for some clarification as to what is allowed for use on your tires, as chains are required by law in some parts of the country.
