Question:
When I hook up my camper in the driveway and hit the brakes ro manual slide only the tiny red dot displays in the center of the LCD readout. does the camper have to be hooked up and moving before the actual numeric readout will display?

One of two things is happening, either the power adjustment is set too low. Or, there is a bad connection on the brake output circuit (blue wire).
First thing I would do is make sure that you do not have the power knob on the side of the controller turned all the way down. I would try adjusting the knob to send more braking power from the controller and see if that fixes it.
Next thing I would do is check all the wires from the brake controller for proper voltage. Use a circuit tester, part # 3808 on the black wire exiting the rear of the controller to ensure the controller is receiving power. Test the red wire and make sure there is voltage when the brake pedal is pressed. Test the blue output wire as the manual override is actuated to check output. Check out the video I attached to see how this is done.
If not, you will need to check the brake output circuit from the controller all the way back to the 7-way harness looking for corrosion, exposed wires, or loose wires.
I attached a review video for this product as well as installation instructions for you to check out also.
