is there a protective boot or anything to seal off the connection area of the PK12801 on the back side in order to eliminate exposure to the elements and corrosion?

There is not a boot or shield to protect this 2-Pole Socket Connector, part # PK12801, from exposure to elements.
I would recommend a generous amount of Electrical Tape, part # BT66, to wrap the terminals and wires to keep out the elements.
You may also be interested in purchasing a 2-Pole Trailer Wiring Connector, part # PK12800.
