The most amount of bikes you can carry with a trunk mounted bike rack on your 2005 Volvo XC90 is 3, as this is as much as your vehicle can handle safely. You would have to carry the other bike on the roof of your vehicle if you choose to use a trunk mounted bike rack. The item you selected, Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier, part # TH911XT, is compatible with your vehicle and would be a good option as it features anti-sway cradles. To carry the 4th bicycle on your roof rack, I would recommend the Swagman Upright Roof Mounted Bike Carrier, part # S64720. If you already have a factory roof rack with crossbars, this rack will mount directly to your factory crossbars. If you decide to do with a trunk mounted bike rack or a hitch mounted bike rack that attaches to the bike frame and will be carrying women, children or alternative frame bicycles, I would recommend Thule Frame Bike Adapter Bar, part # TH982XT. The Thule Adapter Bar will allow you to carry those types of bikes level.
