Why Should Stabilization Strap Be Used on Non-trailer Loads for Curt Class I and II Trailer Hitches

Question:

I have a 2011 Cadillac SRX with the Curt Class II hitch with a Thule 4 bike carrier. I had the carrier installed on my previous Cadillac DTS with a Class II Drawtite. You recommend a stabilizer strap with the bike carrier. I didnt have one with my last set up and didnt have any problems. Why do you recommend the straps? Thanks,

To be in compliance with Curt Manufacturing warranty requirements, a stabilization strap is to be used on class I, II, and some class III trailer hitches as indicated in the instructions. Draw-Tite does not require a strap. What the strap does is help support a non-trailer load, such as a cargo carrier, and reduce some of the stress to help ensure the hitch, vehicle, and cargo are not damaged.

The strap in question can really be any rigid strap, or Curts own # 18050, so long as it helps support the load. The coated hook can be placed at the top of the trunk or hatch in the space between the hatch and body of the SRX.
