I have a small boat trailer with electric brakes. Is a brake controller required for 2014 Buick Enclave 4-pin trailer harness installation to allow brake functionality?

The standard 4-way flat connection on a tow vehicle is designed to operate the trailer lights only. If you are going to be using a trailer with electric brakes then a 7-way connector and a brake controller is needed to operate your trailer brakes.
On a 2014 Buick Enclave with a 4-way flat trailer connection already installed, I recommend both the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, # 90885, and the Etrailer Universal Install Kit for Trailer Brake Controller, # ETBC7.
The # ETBC7 kit will allow you to install a 7-way trailer connector that will give you lighting and brake function to your boat trailer. The 7-way connector will include all the needed wiring and hardware to run the wiring from the rear at the connector to the cab to install the brake controller.
The Prodigy P2 controller is a proportional controller that will give you immediate stopping power when you engage your Enclave's brakes. The proportional braking will apply the same force to your trailer brakes that you apply to you vehicle's brakes.
The P2 will include a 4 wire harness that will connect the brake controller to your 7-way connector and other connections to power and engage the brake controller.
