Question:

Thanks for the recommendation on the bike rack for my 2017 BMW X5. Is that model of bike rack easy to take on and off, or is it more of a permanent set up.

The trunk mount bike rack that I recommend for you to use on your 2017 BMW X5 is the Yakima FullBack 3 Bike Rack # Y02633.

This is a 3 bike rack that comes with both bike and bike rack locks to help prevent theft, plus it has SuperCush anti-sway cradles with ratcheting ZipStrip straps which can accommodate sensitive bike frames like carbon fiber. It also prevents bike-to-bike contact while you are heading down the road and also allows you to fold down the arms when not in use for extra rear clearance. This is one of the nicest trunk mount bike racks that we currently carry and will fit most factory spoilers.

If you have any bikes that have alternative, women's, or kid's frames without the horizontal top tube, I recommend using the Adapter Bar, part # 64005, to help with ground clearance and to keep the bikes level.

All of our trunk mount bike racks will have about the same amount of difficulty to remove as they all use straps to secure the bike rack. To remove the Yakima FullBack, part # Y02633, it is as simple as loosening up the straps and sliding the hooks off of your trunk. Trunk mount bike racks are not really meant to be a permanent solution unless you plan on not accessing your rear cargo space. It is required to take any bike rack off of the trunk before opening the door or hatch.
