It sounds like your gooseneck trailer is fitted with a square coupler/adapter tube such as # BD0289650300. This adapter fits a 4-inch inner diameter square gooseneck tube and provides a 5th wheel king pin to fit into a 5th wheel hitch.
If you want to return the trailer to a gooseneck tube for a 2-5/16-inch ball you can use 4-inch square inner tube Bulldog BX1 Gooseneck Coupler # BD1289210300.
