I have a 03 gmc sierra 1500 hd crewcab shortbed wanting to install a 5th wheel hitch in it what measurements do the rails need to be installed

For your 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 6-1/2 foot bed we have the custom install kit part # RP50064-58 which will utilize holes already in the frame of your truck. It would not require measuring to place the rails as they brackets will place them basically. The rear edge of the rear rail will be 47-1/2 inches from the rear edge of your truck bed. The front rail will be right at 22 inches ahead of this rail measured on center. But best option is to place the rear rail where needed and then use your fifth wheel hitch to locate the front rail.
