Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver And Wiring For 1999 Ford E-450

Updated 03/09/2017 | Published 03/08/2017

Question:

Looking for a trailer hitch w/ 2inch square receiver for our 1999 E450 with a Unicell body with a one step down bumper and has a spare tire mounted between the rails. Might have to add a receiver extension to get by the step. Would like to pull a trailer w/10K cap.

For your 1999 Ford E-450, I recommend the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class IV - 2" # 41906. This will give you a 2 inch receiver and is confirmed to fit all models for that year.

If you don't have the factory 7 way, I recommend you start with the Tekonsha T-One # 118344 that connects behind your tail lights to your factory wiring. You will then use the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. This will give you all the wiring, connectors, and circuit breakers to add a brake controller for trailer brakes that you'll need for that big a trailer.

For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which is a proportional brake controller. It will apply the trailer brakes with the same intensity and at the same time as you hit the brakes in your E-450. This brake controller has an easy to read and understand LCD screen. It takes code deciphering out of the equation and runs continual diagnostics. It is adjustable to your driving preferences and has 3 levels of boost.

If you have a factory 7-way, you will need the the # 3035-P wiring harness adapter to connect your brake controller.

For a ball mount you may want the Curt Multi-Ball Adjustable Ball Mount for 2" Trailer Hitches # D900. You may also want the Curt Lock Set for Adjustable Channel-Style Mounts # C23556. I've linked the page to all your ball mount options for 10K.
