I have attached a photo that will help you determine the correct placement of the axles on your trailer. Where they should be positioned will have a lot to do with the trailer's tongue weight and whether it is less than or more than 10 percent of the trailer's total weight.
First you will need to weigh your trailer to get the total "wheel weight". Then you will obtain the actual tongue weight of your trailer using a scale like # 5780. Next, measure the distance from the tongue to the axle, or to the center between a dual axle set in inches. Lastly, you will determine the total weight, which is simply the tongue weight added to the wheel weight.
Once you have the above calculations, you will plug them into one of two formulas listed on the image, depending the tongue weight percentage.
Using the example figures in the image, if the tongue weight is 1025 pounds, the wheel weight is 7,200 pounds, the distance is 264 inches, the total weight is 8,225 pounds and the tongue weight is greater than 10 percent of the total weight, calculating the corresponding formula will tell you to move the axle toward the tongue of the trailer approximately 6-1/2 inches.
I have also included a link to our available selection of axles and leaf spring trailer suspension systems for you to check out.
