If your 2012 Ford F-250 doesn't have any wiring for trailers, we will need to start with the 2012 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty 4-Pole Hardwire Kit with Circuit Tester, # 18252. This will be a hardwiring kit to give you a 4-pole flat connector.
To upgrade that 4 way, I recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires, # ETBC7. This kit will utilize the 4-way flat and will connect it to a 7-way and 4-way connector. It will also give you the wires for the reverse, power, and brake controller functions. The kit will come with the wire, the circuit breakers, and the connectors needed to add these additional functions. I've attached a video to assist.
If you have a factory tow package, I recommend using the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 7-Way and 4-Pole Flat Connectors, # C55774, which is a simple plug and play application.
To have trailer brake function on your 7 way, you will need a brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is a really nice brake controller that is proportional, giving the trailer brakes the same pressure as you give your truck at the brake pedal. It has a very easy to read and understand LCD screen that makes code deciphering like other brake controllers unnecessary. It has 3 levels of boost and is adjustable for your driving preferences.
If you have a factory tow package, you can use the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, # 3034-P. If you don't have the factory tow package, you will wire it using the # ETBC7 kit.
To adapt your 7-way to a 5-way flat, use Optronics Adapter 7 Pole to 5 Pole Flat - Molded, # A75TB. There ins't a 6 way flat, so I assume you mean 5 way flat.
