How to Pick Winch Capacity for Recovery Winch on Truck
Published 11/23/2016 >
Question:
I have a 2013 ram 2500 crew cab with the cummins, just recently got the warn front winch mount. I know size wise it will fit on the mount, my only worry is that this winch wont be strong enough to pull the truck out when needed. I would say there would be a max use of 10 times a year, so an entry level would be all I need. Would you say a 11,500# winch is strong enough to recover a 3/4 ton truck that is buried to the frame? Attached picture shows mount from site. unfortunately, the 13,500# winch is an inch too deep to fit the mount, as it must be less than 7

When picking out a recovery winch you want to go with one that has a capacity that is at least 1.5 times the total weight of the vehicle. Your truck is going to weigh at most 6,870 lbs so an 11.5k winch like the Superwinch part # SW1511200 would have the needed capacity.
