Does a Gooseneck Trailer Hitch have to be Removed to Install a 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch

Updated 12/24/2025 | Published 08/06/2016

Question:

Do I have to remove my gooseneck hitch before install of 5th wheel hitch and if so can I put it back in after I install the 5th wheel hitch?

Both 5th wheel trailer hitches and gooseneck hitches require frame brackets mounted under the truck bed. The brackets can't overlap so you can have either a gooseneck or a 5th wheel hitch but not both. The exception is if you had a B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck hitch. Then you could use the Companion hitch # BWRVK3500 or # BWRVK3400.

Another option is to keep the gooseneck hitch you have and use an adapter, # AM3100, for when you want to tow a 5th wheel trailer. I have linked videos of the Companion and the adapter for you.

Hi mate ,I just purchased a 79 series land cruiser , it has a gooseneck under the tray , chassis supports air It has been used a fair bit judging from the wear on the ball. The dealership told me it's not in the sale ,however I have taken delivery of the ute ,goose neck still on , I am concerned about the structural integrity of the chassis and tray with the gooseneck and all of the associated hardware being removed . I want to keep the gooseneck setup as is , Do you think I have a valid reason
