Trailer Hitch and Wiring to Tow a Rental Trailer with a 2007 Honda Accord Coupe

Published 06/09/2016

Question:

Hi Guys, I own a Honda accord 2007 V6 coupe. I am planning to move from west coast to the east coast, and would like to take a sofa and a queen bed with me, not too much stuff to rent a large truck. So I am planning to install a hitch from e-Trailer and rent a U-Haul trailer 5x8foot in size. Now I see that there are two different types of hitches for my car. One that bolts straight into the spare trunk, and the other one goes all the way to the frame. So here I have got into trouble deciding which one will work better for my purpose described above. I was wondering if you guys have any input in regards to the durability and strength in general of the two designs. Especially for loaded trailer hauling purposes, and not for bike rack installations. I mean the spare trunk doesnt seem to me as a decent point to hook up the 2000 Lbs towing hitch. Thanking you in advance for your valuable recommendation.

Trailer hitches that install to the frame of a vehicle are the better options for your 2007 Honda Accord. You won't have to drill through the trunk pan and the attachment points on the vehicle are stronger. I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24787 for your towing needs.

The recommended ball mount is # 3592 and you can use 1-7/8 inch ball # 19256 and 2 inch ball # 19258. You will also need trailer wiring. To add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle you can use # C59236.

I checked the owner's manual for the 2007 Honda Accord and found that it is rated for a maximum of 1,000 pounds gross trailer weight. Gross trailer weight is the most the trailer can weigh when loaded and ready to tow. Even though the trailer hitch has a higher capacity you are still limited to 1,000 pounds.
