Question:
What parts of the #118646 wiring harness make it compatible with the regular 2015 Golf, but incompatible with the 2015 GTI? Has this been confirmed, or just an assumption as the two vehilces appear to be seen as different cars here on etrailer as evidenced by the Curt Hitch compatibility assumption. Thanks for your time.

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf and the 2015 GTI do call for different wiring harnesses. Tow-Ready 4-pole # 118646 is a custom-fit powered harness that plugs in at the tail lights of the 2015 Volkswagen Golf using vehicle-specific connectors.
For the 2015 GTI only universal-fit harnesses are available, Tow-Ready # 119250KIT and Curt # C59236, both of which are hardwire installs. These do not have the connectors to match the car.
Both of these will require splicing of wires and you'll need to run their 12V power wire up to the engine compartment as part of the installation, just like with # 118646. These GTI harnesses are shown on the link provided and an article on routing that power wire is also included for you.
