Troubleshooting Factory Installed Brake Controller on 2011 Dodge Ram

Published 10/24/2015

Question:

I have a 2011 Dodge Ram with the factory installed brake box. It gave a code of sc which I understand means it short circuited. Does it have to be replaced?

You can do some fairly simple troubleshooting to determine if the problem lies with the brake controller, or with the wiring between the brake controller and the trailer brake magnets. Access the wiring harness exiting the rear of the controller and sever the blue wire, leaving enough room so you can reconnect it later. Use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 as you're pulling the manual brake switch. If the SC disappears, you know the problem is in the wiring. If the error code is still there, you've proven the controller to be faulty.

If the controller checks out okay, examine the connector on the trailer and on the vehicle, look for damage or corrosion and repair or replace as needed. Trace the blue brake circuit on the trailer, looking for loose or broken wires. Check for worn or cracked wire insulation or pinched wires.
